Emmett Hobbes began writing and drawing after becoming enamored with newspaper comics as a little kid. He was active in the northern Michigan film and animation scene throughout high school.

His portfolio and festival accolades awarded him a generous scholarship from SCAD Atlanta. During senior year there, he was invited to illustrate Rick Spears’ My Riot, a graphic novel about a teenage girl coming of age amidst the Riot Grrrl movement. He became involved in local punk scenes to research the book, which readers praised for its energetic concert scenes and zine-inspired art style.

Shortly after, he approached Webtoon Originals to publish a heist-turns-horror miniseries titled Royale: The Prussian Blue (which is currently finishing up its second arc at 44,000 subscribers). To supplement the series’ historical themes, he took an administrative job at an archaeology firm for two years. The series is colored by college roommate and long-time collaborator Hank Jones.

Emmett has freelanced for Turner Broadcasting, Oni Press, and Dynamite Comics, and is currently an editorial intern at First Second Books.

In the rare moment he isn’t working too hard, Emmett loves to go to vintage shops, spoil his cats, and soak up old detective shows in bed with a huuuuge slice of cake.
